Walking in Timanfaya National Park

You cannot walk Timanfaya on your own, but the park runs free guided walks such as the 3.5 km Ruta de Tremesana, and guided 9 km hikes go next door (Oct 2026). Routes, booking, rules.

Updated October 2026

You cannot walk in Timanfaya National Park on your own: to protect it, the volcano route is seen from a coach, and walking inside the park is only on the national park’s own free guided walks, such as the Ruta de Tremesana, 3.5 km in about three hours, booked through the national parks’ reservation centre. The other way to hike the lava is next door, in the Los Volcanes natural park, where Geotrekking Lanzarote’s guided 9 km hike is rated 4.8 from 1,558 reviews, from US$49 a person (checked October 2026).

The walks are booked on the national parks’ central reservation site, reservasparquesnacionales.es; book as soon as your dates are fixed. The Ruta de Tremesana is the gentle one; the coastal routes are longer and harder.

The rules on any walk: keep to the same path, take nothing volcanic away, and bring your own food and water, since the park has no picnic areas.

A guided hike beside the park

Geotrekking Lanzarote’s hike crosses the lava fields and craters of the Los Volcanes natural park, beside the national park, about 9 km at an easy pace in about three hours. Groups are of up to 10, snacks are included, the guides speak Spanish and English, and a hotel transfer is an option. You need a moderate level of fitness. The meeting point and time are confirmed the day before.

A walk or the coach tour?

The walks show you the lava underfoot, slowly; the coach tour shows you the craters along the volcano route, with the heat demonstrations at Islote de Hilario at the end. They are different days out, and they combine well: the coach for the volcano route, a walk for the lava underfoot. For the coach tour, see the Timanfaya National Park tour and its half-day tour from US$66.
