The Guide
Touring the Fire Mountains: Which Tour, and What You See
The volcano route inside the park is seen from a coach, whoever you go with. What changes is how you get there, what else the day holds and when you go. Here is how to choose.
A Timanfaya National Park tour takes you from your resort to Islote de Hilario, in the lava fields of the 1730s eruptions, drives you along the Ruta de los Volcanes with an official guide and stops for the heat demonstrations, with the timed park ticket included. The most reviewed is Low Cost Tours Europe’s half-day tour: about five hours with pickup from 49 stops in the main resorts, a guide in English, Spanish or French, from US$66 a person, rated 4.4 from 2,876 reviews (checked October 2026). The calendar for it is on this page.

What a tour adds to the ticket
Montañas del Fuego, the visit inside the park, is run by CACT Lanzarote, the island’s network of art, culture and tourism centres. Its ticket is €30 for an adult and free for children up to 6, sold online only for a set entry time between 09:00 and 15:45 (October 2026). With the ticket you drive your own car to Islote de Hilario, then ride the park’s coach: there is no walking or driving the volcano route yourself.
A tour adds the coach from your resort, a guide and the ticket in one booking, so there is no time slot to chase and no car to park on the slope. If you have a car and like to plan, the ticket alone is cheaper; if you do not, a tour is the simpler way in. The entrance fee guide sets out the fee, the opening times and what it covers.
The tours, by what you want
The most reviewed half day. Low Cost Tours Europe’s half-day park tour spends about an hour on the coach inside the park and about 15 minutes at Islote de Hilario, with the camel ride as an optional extra paid in cash. If the park is closed for reasons beyond the operator’s control, the tour visits the park’s interpretation centre instead.
A half day with time at El Diablo. First Minute Travel’s park tour, from US$66, rated 4.4 from 1,055 reviews, adds free time at El Diablo restaurant, a stop at the camel Echadero and the vineyards of La Geria, back at your hotel around 14:00.
Two hours, if you drive. Canary Trip Booking’s express visit from Yaiza, from US$64, rated 4.6 from 383 reviews: park in the Plaza de la Alameda in Yaiza and take their minibus into the park with an official guide.
The park and the coast. Timanfaya with El Golfo and La Geria, from US$70, rated 4.5 from 790 reviews, adds the Green Lagoon at El Golfo and a stop among the vines, in about five and a half hours.
After the day visitors have gone. MTS Incoming’s evening tour with dinner, from US$149, rated 4.5 from 345 reviews, enters the park as it empties, then serves a three-course dinner with drinks and live music at sunset. The evening tour guide has what the evening holds.
The whole volcanic island in a day. Timanfaya with Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes, from US$99, rated 4.5 from 2,923 reviews, runs about nine hours with the entry to all three.

Inside the park
The heart of every visit is the Ruta de los Volcanes, a road through the craters and lava fields laid out by César Manrique (CACT puts it at about 14 km, the Canary Islands government’s park page at 12 km), which nobody may walk or drive on their own. On a tour, your coach drives it with an official guide on board. If you come by car, you park at Islote de Hilario, where El Diablo restaurant is too, and take the park’s coach: one leaves every 20 minutes, with an audio guide in Spanish and English, and you stay on board for about 40 minutes, by CACT’s count. Back at Islote de Hilario, guides show the heat of the ground: water poured into holes in it shoots back up as a column of steam within seconds.
The ground is this hot because of the eruptions that made the park. They began in 1730 and went on until 1736, covering about 174 square kilometres, a quarter of the island, with lava and ash (MITECO’s visitor guide); another followed in 1824. The national park was declared in 1974 and protects 5,107 hectares of that landscape.
The camels. On the way in, the Echadero de los Camellos at the park’s southern edge offers dromedary rides up the slope of a volcano, paid in cash there. The camel ride guide covers what it is like and who it suits.
El Diablo. The restaurant at Islote de Hilario grills meat and vegetables over the heat rising from a well in the ground. The El Diablo guide has what to expect, and why there is no booking.
Beyond the coach
The park’s visitor centre at Mancha Blanca, on the road between Tinajo and Yaiza, explains the eruptions with exhibition rooms, a simulation room and a walkway over the lava, open every day from 09:00 to 16:00. The national park also runs free guided walks, the Ruta de Tremesana among them, booked through the national parks’ reservation centre; walking in Timanfaya compares them with the guided hikes just outside the park.

Staying near the park
Yaiza, the village just south of the park, and Playa Blanca, the resort at the southern tip, are the closest bases, and most tours collect from Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen.

Timanfaya National Park FAQ
The questions people ask before a Timanfaya National Park tour, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
Yes: CACT Lanzarote sells Montañas del Fuego tickets online only, each for a set date and entry time, and there are no ticket sales at the box office (October 2026). Tickets cannot be changed or refunded, and you are asked to arrive 15 minutes before your time. On a tour the ticket is included, so there is nothing to book but the tour. The entrance fee guide has the detail.
€30 for an adult, and free for children up to 6, at Montañas del Fuego as listed by CACT Lanzarote in October 2026. Canary Islands and Lanzarote residents and people with disabilities have special rates, sold at the ticket offices on showing proof; CACT's pages state both this and online-only sales, so residents should check with CACT how to buy before travelling. A half-day tour from US$66 includes the ticket, the coach from your resort and a guide. What the fee covers.
The Ruta de los Volcanes runs every day from 09:00 to 15:45, as listed by CACT Lanzarote in October 2026. You enter at the time on your ticket: arriving early or late is not allowed, and there is no waiting area. The coaches leave Islote de Hilario every 20 minutes. The best time to go.
No: to protect the park, the volcano route, the Ruta de los Volcanes, is seen only from a coach: the park's own, or a tour's with an official guide. You can drive your own car to the car park at Islote de Hilario with a timed ticket, staying in the car from El Taro to the car park, then take the park's coach: about 14 km and about 40 minutes by CACT's count, with an audio guide in Spanish and English. For a walk inside the park, the national park runs free guided walks such as the Ruta de Tremesana. Walking in Timanfaya.
About five hours for a half-day tour with hotel pickup, and about two hours for an express visit from Yaiza. The visit itself, the coach route and Islote de Hilario, takes about an hour and a quarter; the rest is the drive from your resort. Full-day tours that add the caves of the north run eight to nine hours.
No: on the tours here the camel ride is an optional extra, paid in cash at the Echadero de los Camellos, not to the tour. The Echadero is on the road from Yaiza, at the southern edge of the park, and several of the tours stop there. The camel ride guide.
Yes, but it takes no reservations: tables go to whoever arrives first. El Diablo, at Islote de Hilario, grills meat and vegetables over a well five metres deep where the earth reaches around 250 degrees, in a dining room designed by César Manrique. The El Diablo guide.
Its volcanoes have not erupted since 1824, but the ground at Islote de Hilario is still hot enough to boil water poured into it. The eruptions that made the park lasted from 1730 to 1736 and covered about 174 square kilometres of Lanzarote, a quarter of the island, with lava (MITECO). The national park, declared in 1974, protects 5,107 hectares of it.
The park's own coaches are adapted; on the tours, it depends on the listing. CACT Lanzarote lists adapted coaches on the Ruta de los Volcanes, and warns that a pushchair can be difficult. Several of the tours here, including the full days with the caves, the park with El Golfo, the express visit and the evening tour, are listed as not suitable for wheelchair users, and the half-day tour allows folding wheelchairs only, so check the listing before you book.
Closed-toe shoes, sun protection and water. The ground at Islote de Hilario is uneven and rough in places, the lava fields have no shade, and the evening tour asks you to bring warm clothing. When to go and what to bring.
